Considering the way it works, i believe the best policy would have been to inform the public so that players can avoid the hack. I am sorry if you feel this is not the correct way to do this.

Please find some way then to make it so this exploit is not abused then with out explaining the hack.

newbies will be newbies, they will do what they can do to ruin the game of the person who antagonized them the most

You should find a way to report this exploit without screwing over the guy in number 1 position. You deserve a ban for the rest of the round.

The best thing you could have done was email Chick, and explain to her how it works, but instead you chose to tell the world. If someone's game is ruined because somebody learned how to use it, I will blame you Tempest.

Chick must be off line. I asked her to fix richi in the process. I also asked not to be disabled if she see it fit, so they can KT me and take my land.

Chick did not know this worked in GA, and already considered she fixed it, by disabling system logo's. I was showing her that fix is crap.

I wonder how stupid people can get sometimes.. IF there is a hack out there that works and some people know of it and others dont.. and it have been there for many rounds and it wont be fixed, I would like to know of it. I wouldnt ever pay for a premium again if I risk having my account hacked and messed with. Or the fact is.. I would never play the game again.

And if you plan on not doing it, or cant fix the problem then everyone who ever signs up should be informed about the "bug"..

You want the 'bug' explained? Here;

I found this 'hack'* several years ago (Round 5? 6 maybe?). I remember informing Chick about it, and telling her it was generally useless. At no time did she ever tell me it was 'fixed' nor did she ever assume it was fixed. I didn't abuse it, and I didn't mention it to anyone else. Fast forward to what seems like 5 million years into the future (present time) when I no longer play GA/MR/GAX. GAX suddenly reappears on the radar. I sign up with the sole purpose of becoming a farm to anyone who wanted free land and money. I discuss GAX, and how it is old code with a friend. I mention my generally long list of bugs that MIGHT still be in GAX, and how GA would be a very very very hackable game if it weren't for me finding all of them. I try out a bunch of the bugs that I had found previously, and to my surprise they were all fixed. I was happy.

Then I remembered this 'hack'*... I wanted to show off for this friend, so I asked them to copy/paste their [purposely removed] "so I can test something." I then used my superior copy/pasting skills, and ability to open a new tab in IE to send them a message telling them I "h4k3d j00" from their own account. The person hounded me for information on how to do it, but eventually figured it out on their own anyway. I then discussed with them the potential for this, and how it's odd that Chick had yet to fix it.

That's when a spark lit up in my head... System Logos... I had known about a specific HTTP function that all major browsers supported, and the fact that [scripting language of choice] could parse this data, and output a blank image, making no-one the wiser. I quickly wrote a script as proof of concept, and within minutes, I was able to perform my first 'hack'* of someone's account.

I was giddy, since I could potentially kill ANYONE who even tried to look at me. So, I had to tell SOMEONE about it... Which turned out to be a big mistake. The friend I had previously told about this went and told other people (Specifically Tempest here), which was fine until I wanted to try to get Chick's attention by messing around with a few people's accounts. When I did, she instantly banned me of course, and asked how I did it. After about an hour of explaining, I don't think she got it at all, as her only fix was to break System Logos, the 'quick' way of doing this hack. I then told the friend about how I had explained it all to Chick, and that she was going to fix it. She has yet to fix it (It's Christmas for Christ's sake! Give her time...), but the friend assumed she had, and went and told Tempest. So, Tempest, in his infinite wisdom, thought "Well... EA will get pissed off at me, which turns me on so greatly, if I were to mess with this myself, then claim it as a bug I found." So that's what he did. Solely to mess with it, piss me and everyone else off, and alienate himself from the GA community, as he apparently likes to do.

Now here we are. The 'hack'* has always existed, I found it, told Chick about it, nothing was done because it was so obscure, System Logos were added as a feature after I had left GA, so I did not discuss the new potential for the bug with Chick, and finally when I played again, I found the true potential and exploited it to get Chick's attention, and told her exactly how to fix it, and how I did it.



There is now NO REASON for anyone to ever discuss the fine details of this 'hack'* as I have just explained it all, leaving out key bits of information. If you don't want to be hit by this bug, don't talk to or do anything Tempest asks you to do, ever, ever, ever again.

Fine David, i'll let Tempest post how to use the hack with away more details than EA did. Then I'll watch everybody's game get ruined, because they saw it in the forums. That's bullshit, I can't control what is done through messenger or ingame forums, but I can control it spreading here in the forums.

Funny... i remember ea mentioning his hacking abilities long time ago when we talked on aim about ga. there will always be exploits in games, the difference between people is who sinks low enough to "mess around with them" to ruin other peoples game. afaik this hack/bug only works if you know information on the account you want to f up, but wont work on random accounts. so it basically means your messing up some people you know, which makes you an idiot.

Lets make a poll... even though Tempest is an active guy around here, what he did was pure stupidity. I would have understood doing it and sending a message like ea did, but from what i understand the account was totaly wrecked,.. if thats how it is, the person who did it -regardless who- should be banned from OWL, imo.

I was very careful with what I did. I made sure i made it noticed enough chick would not just leave her "quick fix" in place, but also did not totall screw richi, but like demoing all his buildings, and then suiciding, and posting his SoM.

I also told chick exactly what i did so she could revers the process.

If she wants to ban me, she has the right to do that.

Otherwise, i totally understand what people are saying. Yes it may have been junivial, yes it may have been stupid. Deal, it happened, you all already hate me, and oh yeah, KTing the number one guy for no reason is just as stupid and junivial.

It doesn't work like that and you know it. Just because richis or whoevers account was hacked is restored, the chain of events happening as a cause of that is irreversable -only a restore to a backup would do it, but then again that doesn't make what you did fair or ok. It was plain stupidity and you can't possibly say "i just did it to check it out and point it out to chick". This goes to EA as well. One thing is to mess around sending messages and then reporting it, but actually using it to wreck accounts is wrong, no matter how detailed your 'doing's' are to the gamemaster.

Just because I rob a bank and kill 2 people and then tell the cops all how it was done, and include a phrase like 'i just did it to prove how its done, but you can thank me later as you can now put up extra guards at the right place to prevent future incidents' doesn't make it right. nowhere near right.

I too, have known about EA's trick for a long time, when he showed it to me, I said big deal, and I was certain Chick knew about the trick, and shrugged it off.

I am surprised as many people knew about it, EA told me to keep it quiet, but I guess it wasn't so quiet after all.
